St. Paul Square in San Antonio, TX is rich in history dating back to the late 1800's. The years have turned the square into one of the most well-known arts and entertainment venues, featuring cultural and artistic events held throughout the year. The area is very small, but is completely packed with a variety of restaurants with a modest or high-end dining experience. A variety of cuisine to choose from ranging from Ethiopian to French cuisine is offered in the restaurants in St. Paul Square.
Historic Sunset Station is also in St. Paul Square where the annual festival, 'A Taste of New Orleans', brings in music, dancing and delicacies done New Orleans style. St. Paul Square once stood as a train depot, the musical area once served as a loading dock and station house. The station once served as a main stopping point along the Sunset Limited Route on the way to California. This created the 10 acre space which is divided into four sections for concerts, weddings and a variety of other activities.
The area is historic, but has recently been remodeled in some areas, namely in Sunset Station. The station is restored in a matter that kept the original design, but was given a modern feel. Events are scheduled throughout the year for various shows in the square. Hotel accommodations in the area are easy to find in the downtown area. Staying anywhere in downtown keeps visitors close to the square and any other events happening in the city.
Although it was a full 2 years after the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, Texas slaves weren't freed until June 19th, 1865, now celebrated as Juneteenth throughout the state.
