One of the country's largest community-based art schools, the Southwest School of Art and Craft in San Antonio offers classes to all ages and all skill levels. Located along the historic
Riverwalk, the campus is home to contemporary art exhibits and public programs. Visiting artists are also able to host workshops in the facilities.
The state-of-of the art facilities, house the classes and workshops that are taught by outstanding local, regional, and national artists. As a recognized leader in arts education, the school offer programs for more than 400 adults, children and teenagers every year. More than 225,000 people attend events, view exhibits, visit, or take classes every year. The school is located on two adjacent campuses. The Navarro is the high tech campus of the school. This campus is the sight of the contemporary exhibition galleries. All of the newer forms of art are taught here.
The Ursuline Campus of the school is the former home of the Ursuline Academy and Convent. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Approachable from the
Riverwalk, it is open to the public. The school was established by seven nuns who started the first school for girls. The architecture is stunning, with the two-story buildings constructed of local limestone. The chapel still stands with some of its original stained glass still intact. Surrounding the chapel, the gardens and courtyards only add to its beauty. This campus houses the ceramics and weaving studios. The surroundings make this campus the "downtown oasis" of San Antonio.
