Visit the "Home of the Combat Medic" at Fort Sam Houston. The fort is the main medical training facility for the United States Army. It is the largest and most important military medical training center in the world.
Construction on Fort Sam Houston began in the mid 1870's. Today the complex has over 900 buildings, giving it the largest collection of historic military post structures located right on the fort's grounds. The oldest structure at the fort is the Sam Houston Quadrangle. It was originally a supply depot, and then became a holding cell for Geronimo and the Apaches captured with him. Now the Quadrangle serves as an office complex for the U.S. Army North commanding general and staff. Another interesting fact about the buildings at the fort is that given they were all built at different times, the designs and planning are different, representing the different concepts in planning and design.
Located at the Fort is the Fort Sam Houston Museum. The museum offers many exhibits, dating from 1845 to the present in chronological order. Each exhibit shows off the important aspects of the Army at the time, including the soldier's uniform, weapon, and equipment. There are also pictures and other multimedia posted.
A number of distinctive Americans have served at Fort Sam Houston. President Dwight D. Eisenhower served here twice and met his wife while stationed there. Major General John Wilson Ruckman and Brigadier General Billy Mitchell served here as well.
