Casa Navarro State Historic Site in San Antonio, TX
Casa Navarro is one of Texas's most important and also forgotten, historic sites located in downtown San Antonio, Texas.
Casa Navarro was the home of Texas stateman Jose Navarro, a popular defender Texas freedom. Navarro served on the legislature under Mexico, the Republic of Texas, and the State of Texas as he represented the people of San Antonio. Navarro signed the Texas declaration of Independence in 1836 and was the first Tejano to write a history of Texas. This historic site is one of the few in San Antonio that portrays the history of Texas through its Mexican and Tejano roots.
The estate itself sits on a half acre in San Antonio, it was originally built in 1848. Visitors can explore the home decorated in period antique furniture, read writings by Navarro himself, and discuss history with infomed interpreters.
Casa Navarro is open Tuesday through Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., admission for adults is $2 while children under 12 years old are free.
