While the name San Antonio might not ring Irish, the city provides its patrons
with several events and festivities throughout the days leading up to the
holiday. Many of the events begin more
than a week in advance and include golf tournaments and 5K Walks while
culminating in the St. Patrick's Day Parade and wreath laying at the Alamo. The
various festivities vary in admission price.
The Annual Harp & Shamrock Golf Scramble is played at Woodlake Golf Club
in San Antonio, located just off Route 78. The entry fee includes green fees,
cart, food and beer. Traditionally, the golf outing starts around 12:30pm each
year. The Annual St. Patrick's Day 5K Run & Fitness Walk is held each year in
San Antonio's Brackenridge Park. The
event includes food, drink and Irish entertainment. Brackenridge Park is found near San Antonio
Country Club and the University of the Incarnate World.
As part of the St. Patrick's festivities, Irish Heritage Day has been
celebrated on March 9th since 1998.
The Irish Cultural Society of San Antonio sponsors the event each year. Irish Heritage Day includes the education and
learning of Irish customs and crafts while experiencing Irish food and music at
the Leon Valley Community Center. The
Annual Alamo Irish Festival celebrates Irish culture in San Antonio through
food, music, dance and a delightful street parade. The festival takes place for over three days
and is free of charge.
The St. Patrick's Day Parade begins outside the old post office on South
Alamo Street and continues past the Alamo and onto La Villita. It is here that the Alamo Irish Festival
continues after the parade. The parade
has been a staple of San Antonio's St. Patrick's Day Festivities for the past
40 years.
