The festival takes place every April to commemorate the Battle of San Jacinto and remember the heroes of the Alamo. Fiesta San Antonio, which dates back to 1891, also celebrates the city's diverse cultures.
The festival began when a group of women, looking to honor the soldiers in those two battles, paraded in front of the Alamo in decorated horse-drawn carriages, and proceeded to throw flowers at each other. Known as the Battle of Flowers (which still takes place today), it became an annual event, and has grown to the multi-cultural event seen today, which includes a flotilla in the San Antonio River. The other two parades that take place during Fiesta San Antonio are the Texas Cavaliers River Parade and the Fiesta Flambeau Parade.
A wide variety of events take place all over the city during Fiesta San Antonio. Because of the amount of participation in this festival, many events take place at the same time.
