If you are a fan of the magic and fun that is the circus then you do not want to miss the Art of the Circus exhibit at the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas. The Art of the Circus exhibit allows visitors to explore the behind the scenes excitement of the circus through art, posters and costumes.
Visitors will see circus costumes, including some used by the world famous Ringling Brothers Circus, and they will be able to explore how circus costumes have changed over the years.
The artwork in the exhibit was done by German born artist Emil Rothengatter. Mr. Rothengatter was raised in the United States and at age 22 began work for Currier & Ives in New York City. After working for Currier & Ives, Mr. Rothengatter had different jobs including being commissioned by James A. Bailey to illustrate the birth of the first baby elephant born in captivity. His circus art was later transformed into posters.
Many of the posters in the collection date back to the early 1900s and include famous circuses such as the Ringling Brothers Circus and the Barnum and Bailey Circus.
The Witte Museum, located in Brackenridge Park, has regular exhibits that focus on Texas culture, history and natural science. It also has traveling exhibits, special programs and a gift shop.
