Annual Lowrider Festival
Each year, The Centro Cultural Aztlan of San Antonio presents a unique and fun festival to promote a distinctive form of art. Presented the first Sunday of April, The LowRider Festival promotes Mobile Art from the El Arte de los Barrios community. They have displays of customized cars. These cars are all original works of art. The mobile art displays entered into the festival are judged and are awarded cash prizes for the best of the cars, trucks and motorcycles. By hosing the festival, The Central Cultural Aztlan aims to develop, maintain, and promote consciousness of their art and culture. They also have other programs to accomplish this as well. The festival is fun for the whole family. In addition to the LowRider car exhibits, there is Tejano food, games for kids and live entertainment. The admission fee provides funding for the Centro Cultural Aztlan to continue to offer programs and events. Since they are a non-profit organization, they rely on these fundraising events to further develop and promote their art and culture. They are located in the historic Deco Building on Fredericksburg Road in San Antonio. They host many events at their location. There is a gallery with art exhibits that is open to the public. The Centro Cultural Aztlan derived their name from Atzlan, the mystical land in the Americas. It is said that the Aztekahs (Aztecs), one of the legendary seven nomadic tribes of the Nahaul-speaking Indians, traveled south from there and founded Tenochtitlan, which is present day Mexico City. This is where the Chicano culture began. Come and experience the Chicano culture through art, food and live entertainment. See some unique forms of art and learn more about this fascinating culture.
