The Alamo grand tour
See The Alamo during the Grand Tour
The Alamo is one of Texas's most cherished historical sites, which is why it is such a popular tourist destination. Originally built in 1724 as a mission, the
Alamo served missionaries and their Indian converts for 70 years. In 1794 the Spanish turned over all the missions in the area to the Indians. During the 1800's the
Alamo served as a military outpost to Spanish, Mexican, and Texas revolutionaries too.
The Alamo played a crucial role in the fight for Texas independence from Mexico. In December of 1835 Texas revolutionaries drove the Mexican forces out of the
Alamo. In February 1836, the Mexican army returned, led by General Santa Ana. For 13 days the battle of the
Alamo raged on, nearly two hundred Texans fought to drive back the Mexican forces, but they were unable to. Although they were defeated, the bravery and determination of the Texans represents courage and liberty to present day Texans and all Americans.
