Guenther House
The Guenther House was built in 1860 and was originally the home of Carl Hilmar Guenther, the founder of Pioneer Flour Mills. The house sits in the oldest historical district in the state, and is known for its architectural detail that has been beautifully restored. The house today is a wonderful museum that not only explores the life and times of Carl Guenther but also gives you a glimpse of life during the period. The museum boasts a library filled with period books, and rare mill memorabilia such as antique cookie cutters and other baking accessories, Dresden plates, a hand-carved marble table, alabaster and brass ceiling fixtures, and more. On-site, you will also find a restaurant and a gift shop.
Texas Air Museum
Aviation buffs won't want to miss the chance to visit the Texas Air Museum, located just south of the downtown area at 8024 Cadmus at the Stinson Municipal Airport. This popular museum is filled with exhibits covering the history of aviation and aircraft development, including both military and non-military exhibits. You can view uniforms, munitions, weapons, photographs, and of course aircraft displays. Some of the more popular exhibits here include beautifully restored items like an old Bleriot owned by Katherine Stinson and a Focke-Wulf 190. Guided tours are available, or you can choose to explore the museum on your own.
Texas Transportation Museum
At the Texas Transportation Museum, you can take a journey through time exploring the different modes of transportation that have been instrumental in the growth of the state as well as the daily lives of Texans across the centuries. This museum will be a family favorite, giving kids and adults alike the chance to step on board full-size and operational train cars. The museum also boasts miniature railroad displays, restored horse carriages, cars and trucks from yesterday and today, streetcars, fire engines, farm vehicles, and so much more.
Witte Museum
With a visit to the Witte Museum, you can learn more about South Texas history, covering everything from culture to the sciences. The Witte Museum sits in the beautiful Brackenridge Park area at 3801 Broadway, and features a wide variety of exhibits that will fascinate your whole family. Here, you can explore exhibits featuring dinosaur skeletons, fossils, wildlife dioramas, cave drawings, artwork from local Texas artists, textiles, and more. The kids will love the hands-on activities at the kid's center, where they can learn about ancient wildlife, mummies, science, and more. Everyone will have a great time tat the San Antonio River — River Alive exhibits, giving you an interactive experience with native aquatic life. Before you leave, be sure to pick up a few gifts or souvenirs at the gift shop. The Witte Museum also hosts special exhibits throughout the year, including On Parade: Fiesta in the 1920s, Return of the Dinosaurs:Extreme Makeover!, Texas Zydeco, Taste of the Heights, and more.
