The Alamo grand tour
See The Alamo during the Grand Tour
Featuring sights including the Alamo, Market Square and more, the Grand Tour makes for a unique eye-opener into the historic legacy of San Antonio, while also allowing you a hands-on view of the life and culture that pervades this region. The tour guides you through the Alamo, which is undoubtedly one of the most legendary spots in Texas, famed for the incredible role it assumed during the Texas Revolution. Built as the city's first mission in 1718, this edifice now serves as a museum, and is home to several interpretative exhibits and artifacts. From here, you are then lead to the IMAX Theater, where you can journey through the historic Battle of Alamo on a giant screen, complete with state-of-the-art sound effects.
And as the balmy sun climbs higher, cool off with a relaxing Riverboat Ride down Paseo Del Rio, which is followed by a visit to the vibrant Market Square or El Mercado, as it is locally known. And if that isn't variety enough, you are then introduced to the largest mission in all of Texas, namely the Mission San Jose, which once held up to 300 inhabitants. Your tour draws to an end with a sojourn into the Japanese Sunken Gardens, where the winding pebble walkways, stone bridges and water fall, transport you to the Zen tranquility of the Orient. The final stop is the Mission Concepción, which recounts the era of the Spanish Conquest and is the oldest unrestored stone church in the country today.
Your coach trip to and from the various destinations is speckled with other interesting sights, which include the famous San Fernando Cathedral, the 750-foot tall Tower of the Americas, and the Institute of Texan Cultures.
